Why Your Next Phone Charger Should Have Magnets in It

A few months back, a friend of mine was telling me about her wireless charger, explaining how finicky it performed. 

Ninety percent of the time, her phone charges. The other ten percent, she explained, it's sitting off kilter doing absolutely nothing. She doesn't find out until she's already backed out of the driveway at 4%.

If you've used a wireless charger in a car, you know this feeling. The pad doesn't care about potholes, lane changes, or the fact that you just tossed your phone onto it while holding a coffee. One nudge and you regret not plugging it in via a USB cable.

Qi2 is the current global standard for wireless charging, set by the Wireless Power Consortium, the same group that's been defining wireless charging specs for over a decade. In short, Qi2 adds a ring of magnets around the charging coil, so the moment your phone gets close, it snaps into the one exact spot where power actually transfers efficiently.

That one evolutionary change is significant. The original Qi standard was a good idea with a bad habit: it depended on you eyeballing the alignment between your phone's coil and the charger's coil. Off by even a few millimeters, and you'd get slower charging, or none at all, with zero indication why. Qi2 turns that guesswork into a physical certainty. The magnets do the aligning for you, so the connection you get is the one you expected.

The upside compounds from there because better alignment means less energy wasted as heat, which means a cooler phone, a healthier battery over time, and speeds that actually hold up instead of quietly throttling in the background.

Why This Matters More in a Car Than Anywhere Else

A nightstand doesn't hit potholes. 

A desk doesn't have direct sun baking through a windshield for three hours.
